I finally understood what my old foreman meant about 'listening to the cut' after a quiet morning in the Cincinnati shop.
He shut the machine off, put his hand on the column, and said, 'Kid, the sound of a good finish is like a quiet river, not a rockslide,' and I've checked every part by ear first ever since that day in '08, anyone else still do that?

My old boss said the same thing, and I used to think it was nonsense until I heard the difference myself.

That quiet river sound you mentioned, what does it actually feel like in your hands? Is it more of a steady vibration or just the total lack of chatter?

Ever think it was just shop floor poetry? I was sure a dial indicator told the whole story. Then I had a part that measured perfect but just sounded...angry, like a bag of gravel. Reworked the feed, and that shift to @fisher.diana's quiet river sound? That's when the lightbulb went off. Now my ear catches a chattering drill or a dull insert way before the numbers go bad.
