A guy at the shop in Tulsa said he checks his vise jaws every Monday, I laughed, then I checked mine
I was standing at the tool crib last Tuesday and overheard an older operator say he grabs a dial indicator and sweeps his vise jaws every Monday morning before he cuts anything. I figured that was overkill since I trammed my vise back when I set the machine up in March. Out of curiosity I checked mine that afternoon and found almost 0.004 inches of jaw lift on the back side. Turns out the chips I was blowing off with air were getting packed under the movable jaw and I never noticed because my parts are all plus or minus 0.010. I pulled the jaws, stoned the seat, and re-trammed it, and my finish pass on 6061 got way cleaner. How often are you guys actually pulling your jaws to clean under them, or am I the only one who got lazy about it?
