Why does nobody talk about the $45 smart power strip that cut my phantom load
I got a smart power strip for $45 last winter after my roommate moved out and my electric bill jumped $30 a month even though I barely changed anything. Turned out my old TV, soundbar, and game console were sucking down power 24/7 even when everything was off. I plugged them all into the strip and set it to kill everything at midnight, and my bill dropped $22 the first month. The strip paid for itself in basically two months, which feels wild for something that just sits there. Anyone else find a cheap gadget that actually moved the needle on their usage, or is it mostly just turning the thermostat down?
Used to roll my eyes at stuff like this and figure the savings were made up or like ten bucks a year. Then I actually put my old desktop, monitor, and speakers on a switched strip and killed it every night, and the change showed up on the very next bill. Sometimes the boring fix is the one that actually works.
