The week our block's rain barrels actually saved the garden, but then the pump gave out

Last Tuesday we got 2 inches of rain in about 3 hours, and for once the gutters were clear so all four barrels on our street filled up. We used that water to keep the community tomato beds alive through the 5 day dry stretch that followed, which felt great. But then on Saturday the little submersible pump I rigged up just stopped, cheap thing from Amazon, and I spent the morning hauling buckets from the last half-full barrel. Anyone else tried those solar powered pumps for rain collection, or is manual bucket duty just the reality for small neighborhood setups?

Three solar pumps died here last year, so bucket hauling is honestly way more reliable.
