Rant: The $300 'eco-friendly' compost bin that became a bug hotel

Bought this fancy aerobic composter from a startup in Portland last spring after seeing their ads everywhere. Spent 300 bucks and 4 months of weekly maintenance, only for it to attract rats and fill with flies in my backyard near the river. The thing needs constant airflow adjustments and even then it never broke down food properly. Has anyone else tried those big tumblers from local stores instead, or should I just go back to a plain pile?
