My neighbor's bare yard turned into a jungle of food in 3 summers, and I finally asked how
Three summers ago the house next door had nothing but dry dirt and one sad pine tree. Now Maria has raised beds, fruit trees, and two rain barrels catching water off her gutter, all on a lot the same size as mine. She said the whole thing started with free compost from the city program and a truckload of wood chips dropped off by a tree crew on our street. The rain barrels alone cut her water bill by about $30 a month, which got me thinking about my own lawn. Does anyone here have a city compost or chip drop program that actually works, or did you have to pay for soil like I probably will?
