My neighbor asked me about my rain barrel setup

I was out in my yard in Portland last week filling a watering can from the big blue barrel I hooked up to my downspout. My neighbor, Frank, stopped and asked me how much water I actually save with it. I told him it catches about 55 gallons from one good rain, and his eyes got wide. He said he never thought something that simple could make a real dent. Has anyone else had a small talk like that turn into someone actually trying it?

Yeah, maybe add a chart showing how many toilet flushes that equals.

Funny how the big numbers make it click for people, right? Makes you wonder if we should just paint gallon marks on the side of the barrel like a giant measuring cup. That visual might get even more neighbors on board without saying a word.
