My compost pile caught fire in the backyard on Tuesday

I was turning my compost in the backyard here in Phoenix when I saw smoke. I'd added too much dry grass clippings and the pile got too hot. I had to grab the garden hose and soak the whole thing for about 15 minutes to put it out. Has anyone else had a compost pile overheat, and how do you balance the green and brown stuff better?

Try adding cardboard layers to slow it down.

Disagree with @the_amy, cardboard can mat down and block air.
