My bike-only pledge met its match with a week of downpours

I swore off driving to reduce my carbon footprint and committed to cycling. Of course, that was the week we got record rainfall, and I arrived at work looking like a drowned rat every day. My backpack wasn't waterproof, so all my papers got ruined. Ended up calling for rides half the time, which kinda defeated the whole point.

Oh man, my friend tried that same thing last spring. She lasted three soggy days before she went back to her car.

Seattle in April broke my own camping record at four days. People forget location matters more than gear or willpower. Trying to live rough in a constant drizzle is a different fight than doing it under a dry Arizona sky. The environment you pick is often the real deciding factor.

Ugh, I feel this in my bones. My own "roughing it" limit is basically one overcast afternoon (I'm a total baby about it). Picking the wrong spot turns a fun trip into a fight you just can't win.
