Just lost $200 on a 'green' home energy audit that was basically useless

I paid a local company to come out and do a full home energy audit last month, thinking it would show me exactly where to save power. The guy was here for maybe 30 minutes, used a basic thermal camera, and gave me a generic report I could have printed off the internet. It basically just said 'add more insulation' and 'seal your windows,' with no real numbers or plan. I was out $200 and learned nothing new. Has anyone else had a good experience with a different type of audit that actually gave specific, helpful advice?

A basic audit is often all most homes really need. The common advice about insulation and windows applies to nearly every older house. Paying for fancy tests usually just confirms what you already suspected.

So what do you actually get in a basic audit these days? Are they just walking around with a checklist saying "yep, needs insulation" or are they using any tools at all? I've heard some guys just give the same advice to every house without really looking.
