I finally saw a wildfire up close while visiting family in Bend, Oregon

We were driving back from a hike and the whole sky turned orange, with ash falling like dirty snow. The air got so thick we had to put masks on just to sit on the porch. It made the climate crisis feel real, not just something on the news. What are some real things people are doing to prepare their homes or towns for stuff like this now?

That "ash falling like dirty snow" is exactly what got me too, it's a scary sight. After our own close call, our whole street got serious about clearing brush. We made a 30-foot clear zone around every house, which firefighters call "defensible space." It's a lot of chain saw work, but it gives crews a fighting chance. We also all got those box fan filters to make clean air rooms inside during smoke events. It's not perfect, but it makes you feel less helpless.

Why wait for a close call? That defensible space is basic stuff now. It's not fuss, it's just how you have to live out here. Smart move getting ahead of it.

Sounds like a lot of fuss over some smoke.
