Walked through a retro gaming convention last weekend and got annoyed at the modding panels

Every single talk was just showing off reshade presets and texture packs for Doom, nobody talked about actual code tweaks or engine hacks. I counted 4 panels and 3 of them were basically just "look how pretty my game looks now." Anyone else feel like the community is losing sight of the technical side of modding?

I walked through one of those hardware store aisles last week and saw 8 different types of smart lightbulbs but not a single pack of plain old incandescent ones. That's the same thing you're talking about. People want the easy payoff, the quick visual upgrade that looks good on a screenshot. Nobody wants to wrestle with assembly code or figure out why a texture glitch is crashing the engine on a specific graphics card. It's like everyone went from building their own furniture to just buying the pre-assembled stuff and putting stickers on it. The craft is gone because the Instagram likes come faster than the satisfaction of solving a real technical problem.

Okay but isn't that just how everything goes now? I remember when I tried to learn guitar off YouTube and everyone was like "just learn these three chords and you're playing songs," so I did that and got bored fast. But the real fun came when I sat down and actually figured out why my strumming sounded muddy and how to fix it with my own ears, not a tutorial. That's the same thing with games and coding and all that - people skip the part where you bang your head against the wall until something clicks. The glue you use to hold that pre-assembled furniture together ain't gonna teach you how to cut the wood yourself, right?
