Tried a Brutal Doom mod on alpha Minecraft and got a crash fest
I loaded a Doom monster pack into alpha 1.2.6 using MCPatcher last night. The imps spawned fine but the cyberdemon crashed the whole game every time I got near him. Took me 3 hours to figure out it was the projectile textures being too large for the old engine. So what do you think, is it worth backporting modern mods to old versions or just stick with the era your mod was made for? Has anyone else hit this wall with alpha builds?

Dove into the same problem with alpha 1.1.2 last year trying to get some shader mods to work. Ended up having to manually resize every single texture file in the pack to 16x16 because the old engine just couldn't handle anything bigger. Took a weekend but it ran smooth after that. My take is it's worth the hassle if you really want that specific mix of old and new, just know you'll spend more time fixing than playing. The old code has hard limits that modern stuff just ignores, so you have to treat it like patching a vintage car with modern parts. If you don't mind the tinkering, go for it, but don't expect a plug and play experience.

Oh man, @piper_green is spot on with the vintage car analogy. I tried doing something similar with a texture pack last summer and spent like four hours just cropping pixel art because the game kept crashing anytime I looked at a tree. Totally worth it in the end but you really gotta commit to the fixing part first.
