The $35 external floppy drive that saved my Quake mod backups

I mean, I thought my old CDs were fine for 15 years, but when I finally dug them out last month that drive was the only way I could read any of them, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has had to burn their custom WADs to newer discs just to keep them alive?

Did you ever check the discs for that white rot stuff some CD-Rs get over time? I heard a retro computing podcast mention it a while back, and it made me paranoid about all my old backups. Same thing happened to me with some Doom WADs I stashed on cheap discs in the early 2000s, and about half of them were toast when I tried to read them last year. I ended up re-burning everything onto a few high-quality M-DISCs and now I keep a second copy on a plain old USB stick, just in case. It is a pain, but better than losing all that work, especially when the mods are no longer anywhere online.
