That guy who swore by vanilla Doom before trying source ports was right about everything
Back in 2019 a guy on the Doomworld forums kept telling me to stop messing with the DOSBox setup and just grab GZDoom already. I argued that vanilla was the only pure way to play. He said PrBoom and GZDoom are just tools, not heresy. I finally caved last month after three failed attempts to get the original EXE working on my Windows 11 machine with the right sound card patch. He was spot on. The mouse look alone makes it a whole new game, and now I'm modding with a level editor he recommended. Anyone else hold out on source ports for years and then kick themselves once they actually switched?

Buddy of mine raged about source ports for years, swore he'd only play on original hardware. He finally got a copy of Final Doom running on his old Pentium and wanted a modern controller setup. Took him a weekend to admit GZDoom made the whole thing feel like he was playing it for the first time again.
