Spent a weekend replacing every texture in my Doom map with 4x upscaled ones, and the fog actually looked worse
Working on a big outdoor map for the last few weeks. I normally run vanilla textures at 320x200 because that's what I grew up on and I think the grain looks right. But I kept seeing these AI upscale packs everywhere so I figured why not try it. Took me two evenings to swap everything, convert the flats, fix the patch table, all that. Loaded it up and the lost soul fireballs looked great. Then I walked outside into my big courtyard area and the whole thing just died. The distant walls used to blend into the fog thanks to the low detail, and now every brick is razor sharp so the fog looks like a gray sheet sitting on top of a crisp photo. My whole depth trick was built on the textures being muddy. Put the originals back and it looked right again. So the low res wasn't a limit I was working around, it was doing half the work. Curious if anyone here builds maps around texture grain on purpose, or am I just being stubborn about 1993 pixels?
