One guy's Quake patch file wiped my whole map folder last month

I was swapping custom maps on the old Doomworld forums and this dude named 'Sledge' sent me a patch he said fixed a texture glitch. I ran it and it deleted every .wad in my source ports folder, about 40 maps I had collected since 2019. When I messaged him about it, he just said 'read the zip next time' and logged off. Turns out he packed a batch script that was meant for his own setup, not for sharing. I lost a weekend of work on my own level plus all my favorite community maps. Has anyone else gotten burned by a sloppy patch from a stranger on these forums, and do you sandbox everything now?
