Doom mod textures based on my trip to Prague old town
Walked around Prague last weekend and the cobblestone alleys and peeling plaster walls gave me major Doom 1 vibes. I snapped like 40 reference photos of brick patterns and rusty drainpipes, thinking about mapping them into a custom texture pack. Has anyone else pulled real world photos into GIMP and turned them into Doom or Quake textures? Curious how you handle the scaling so they don't look washed out at 320x200.
Love this idea, old European cities are perfect for Doom textures because they already look beat to hell. I did the exact same thing after a trip to Rome, took a bunch of shots of stained stucco and iron grates and ran them through GIMP with the offset filter so they tile right. The scaling thing is the real headache, you have to crop tight on the actual pattern before you shrink it down, otherwise the mortar lines turn to mush at 320x200. My trick is to scale to 64x64 or 128x128 first, then posterize the colors down to like 8 or 16 shades so it keeps that gritty palette look instead of turning into a blurry photo. Also boost the contrast a ton and desaturate a bit, because real world lighting is way softer than what Doom's engine expects. Let me know if you post the pack, I'd play a wad with Prague textures any day.
