That $90 saffron I found in the back of my spice drawer
Found a jar of saffron threads I bought for a paella special back in March, stashed behind some smoked paprika. Checked the date and realized the whole batch lost its punch, it smelled like hay instead of honey. I probably used maybe 20% of that jar before forgetting it existed, so that's basically $72 down the drain. Has anyone else burned money on fancy spices that just sat there because you planned a dish once and never circled back to it?
...my friend Maria found a whole tin of vanilla beans in her pantry she'd bought for a batch of homemade extract. She said she forgot about them for like two years, and when she opened it, they were dry and basically useless. She tried to salvage them by soaking them anyway but the extract just tasted like weak, sad nothing. $40 for that tin too, she still brings it up when we talk about grocery regrets.
