My station went from a mess to organized after I started using a 'mise en place' timer.

I set a 10-minute timer before service to check every single ingredient and tool. The difference in my speed and stress level was huge, like night and day. Anyone else use a similar pre-shift ritual to get locked in?

Mise en place is basically just adult show-and-tell for cooks. Setting a timer turns that basic task into a game you can win, which is way more fun. The real trick is not using that same timer to count down until your next break.

Honestly, that timer trick is a game changer. I started doing it to see how fast I could get everything chopped and measured before the beep. It turns a boring setup into a little race against yourself. The hard part is not getting so into it that you rush and slice a finger off. But yeah, winning that tiny game makes starting dinner way less of a chore.

Totally, turning chores into a race is the only way I get through them. My record for unloading the dishwasher is kinda sad but I'm proud of it.
