Line cook at my old spot quit over a $0.47 raise, and I thought he was nuts until I did the math
He was making $14.25 an hour on the grill and the owner offered him $14.72 after two years. I laughed about it with the other guys for a week. Then I ran the numbers on my own check and realized that raise is about $19 a week after taxes, which is one decent shift meal and not much else. The guy now works at a place downtown pulling $19 an hour, and honestly I get it now. How do you all bring up money with an owner who acts like every raise comes out of his own wallet?
Man, the part that gets me is that $19 an hour is not even crazy money, it is just what the job is actually worth. If an owner can only keep you by paying you under $15, he is not running a business, he is running a favor and expecting you to eat the cost. Ask for a sit down, bring your numbers, and if he starts talking about the wallet, that is your answer right there.
