Just realized I've been slicing onions wrong for 8 years

Heard this older chef at a diner counter tell his apprentice that you should cut off the root last, not first. I've been doing it opposite since culinary school. Tried it on my next shift and the tears stopped almost completely. Anyone else pick up a basic tip way later than they should have?

Damn, that's wild. Heard a similar thing from a line cook buddy and blew my mind too. Always thought you had to chop the root first to keep the layers together, but the tears were brutal. Switched it up last week and it's a total game changer, hardly any sting now.

Nah, you're good, cutting the root first actually makes it worse!
