That $8 thermal paste tube from Micro Center actually dropped my CPU temps by 12 degrees from the stock goop after I redid it this morning.
I just switched from the pre-applied stuff on my old cooler to this cheap Arctic MX-4 and the difference was huge under load, has anyone else noticed how bad those stock pads really are for casual builds?

Stock thermal paste is usually mediocre at best in my experience, the MX-4 is a solid upgrade that won't break the bank. Just make sure you don't use too much or it can actually hurt your temps.

Wow, you know what always gets overlooked in this whole thermal paste debate? The age of the tube itself. A lot of folks grab a syringe that's been sitting in a drawer for three years and that stuff can separate and dry out way before you even open it. I've had more than one build where the temps were worse after a repaste just because the compound had gone bad. Always give that tube a good squeeze to check the consistency before you put it on a fresh CPU.
