That $15 thermal paste tube I was skeptical about really worked

My CPU was hitting 90 degrees under load, so I grabbed some Arctic MX-4 off Amazon for $15 after seeing good reviews. I was doubtful since my old paste was just a generic tube from a repair kit. Cleaned off the old stuff, applied a pea-sized drop, and after remounting my cooler, temps dropped to 72 degrees. Has anyone else been surprised by a cheap thermal paste upgrade?

Wait, were you using the stock thermal paste that came pre-applied on the cooler before you swapped to the MX-4? Because I've found that old paste can get really dry and crusty over time, and cleaning that off is honestly the biggest part of the temp drop you see. But also, did you check how tight your cooler was mounted before you swapped? I had a similar jump once, but it turned out my cooler wasn't seated evenly, so the new paste just filled the gaps better.

Oh man, I gotta push back on this one a bit! I've tried MX-4 and honestly didn't see much of a difference from the stock paste that came with my cooler. My temps went from 88 to 85, so barely noticeable. I think a lot of it is just placebo from cleaning off the old crusty stuff rather than the paste itself being some miracle. And for $15, you're paying for the brand name and marketing, not some secret thermal magic that a $5 tube couldn't do just as well.
