Stop using thermal paste spreaders, they cause more harm than good

I keep seeing people in here recommending those little plastic spreader cards to flatten thermal paste, but I swear they introduce air bubbles every time. Last week at a repair in Phoenix I pulled off a heatsink with a spreader-applied paste and it looked like swiss cheese underneath. Has anyone actually tested these things side by side against the pea method and gotten better temps?

The pea method gave me 3 degrees better on a Ryzen 7 build last month.
