Spent $15 on thermal paste and it fixed my overheating laptop

My old HP laptop was hitting 95C just from watching YouTube so I grabbed a tube of Arctic MX-4 for 15 bucks at Micro Center. Popped the back off, cleaned the old crusty paste with rubbing alcohol, and now it stays at 70C under load. Anyone else had a cheap fix like this save them from buying a new machine?

Spent $15 on thermal paste and it fixed my overheating laptop" - sounds like you basically performed a miracle with a tube of goop and some rubbing alcohol. Next thing you know they'll be charging $200 for a "laptop cooling service" that just does the same thing.

man i've done this exact thing on three different laptops now, @rowan666 it's literally the cheapest fix you can do if you're careful with the disassembly. last time i had an old dell that was hitting 95c just browsing youtube, wiped off the crusty old paste with coffee filter and isopropyl, put on some arctic mx-4 and boom 30c drop at idle. people freak out about opening laptops but it's really just unscrewing stuff and keeping track of where the screws go. worth spending the $15 instead of tossing a laptop that works fine otherwise.
