Had to choose between a used GPU or a new PSU for my old rig

My 8 year old PC started crashing during games, and I figured the graphics card was dying. Spent a weekend torn between a $60 Radeon RX 580 off Craigslist or a $50 EVGA power supply from Amazon. I went with the new PSU (figured a bad one can fry everything), and turns out the old Corsair unit had a bulging capacitor. PC's been solid for 3 months now with the original GPU still running fine. Anyone else been burned by ignoring a failing PSU?

Actually that 50 dollar EVGA unit is a solid call. I grabbed a Corsair CX430 years ago for a budget build and it ran fine until a buddy's similar unit started acting flaky. He ignored it and ended up frying his motherboard (a gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P) and an old AMD FX-6300. My point is those caps can look fine visually but still go bad under load. The RX 580 is tempting (especially for the price) but a used GPU from someone's mining rig is a total gamble anyway. You made the right call even if the old PSU wasn't the only problem yet.

That capacitor was probably on its way out for a while before you noticed?
