Cheap PSU fan swap saved my old rig for $9

My 8 year old power supply started buzzing like a angry bee last month. Repair shop quoted me $85 just to look at it, which is more than the whole PC is worth. I watched a YouTube video and swapped the dead fan with a generic 120mm one I got off Amazon for $9. Took about 40 minutes with a soldering iron and some shrink tube, but the thing runs quiet and cool now. Has anyone else pulled off a PSU fan swap, or is this just asking for a fire? I want to know if I should keep using it daily.
