Blew out a capacitor on my old motherboard last month

I was trying to fix a friends Dell Optiplex from 2015, smelled something weird, and pop went a capacitor near the CPU. Instead of tossing the board I just grabbed a soldering iron and a $3 capacitor kit off Amazon. My buddy Joe stood there watching me like I was crazy, but after I swapped it out the thing booted right up. Has anyone else tried recapping a board instead of replacing it?

People forget how much stuff gets thrown away that just needs one little fix. Society trains us to buy NEW instead of taking 10 minutes to learn a skill. Good on you for proving that $3 fix works better than a whole new board.

Man that's so true, @jamesmason ... it's like once something breaks even a little bit, people's first instinct is to just scrap it and buy another one. I've been watching this happen with little appliances and even furniture around my neighborhood. Someone throws out a decent lamp just because the switch gets finicky, or a chair with a loose screw. A little time and a basic tool could save so much from the dumpster.
