Why I stopped stretching carpet with a knee kicker on every single room
I have been setting carpet for 14 years and I always grabbed the knee kicker first out of habit on every job. Two weeks ago I was doing a 3 bedroom rental out in Mesa, Arizona and the homeowner's son, who installs up in Flagstaff, watched me work for about an hour. He did not say a word until I got to the last bedroom and then he asked why I was not power stretching first and using the kicker just to position. I told him I had always done it that way and he just shrugged. So I tried his order on that last room, power stretcher from the far wall back to the door, kicker only for the fine edges, and the backing laid flat with almost no ripple within 20 minutes. I went back and checked the first two rooms I finished and sure enough there was a little hump near the doorway I would have left behind. Now I run the power stretcher on anything over 12 feet and only reach for the kicker at the end. Curious if any of you learned this the hard way too or if your shop trains it right from day one.
