Old timer in Daytona taught me the chalk line trick

I was doing a tear out in a condo complex near the beach, second floor unit, and this guy who installed back in the 80s was helping his daughter move out. He watched me lay out the room and just shook his head, then showed me how he snaps a chalk line before every seam, even on the short ones. He said, 'You trust the pad, not your eye, kid,' and handed me his old beat up chalk box. The trick itself is sound, but one thing bothers me. You don't need to snap a line on every short seam, especially in smaller rooms where the subfloor is flat. The line helps you stay straight, but on runs under four feet, a good straightedge does the same job faster. I've seen guys waste time snapping lines where the seam barely moves an eighth of an inch anyway. The real lesson is checking your layout from the longest wall first, not just popping chalk everywhere. That old timer probably meant it for long halls and open areas. On a condo bedroom, you're better off trusting a square and a steady hand.
