DAE remember their first stretcher kick and actually get it right on the second try
Third job on my own, back in March, a small bedroom in a rental out in Beaverton. I kicked that stair tool and felt it slip a tooth near the top. Thought I ruined it. Pulled it back, reset, kicked again, and it locked in clean the whole way up. Stood there for a second just staring at it. My old lead guy used to say you know you got it when the kick stops scaring you. Took me about 40 jobs to get there, but I got there. Anyone else still remember the exact room where the kick finally clicked for them?
Remember pulling up to my buddy's place to help him lay carpet in his basement and he hands me this beat up old knee kicker with duct tape on the pad. I'd only ever used a stair tool before that, so I'm thinking how different can it be. First kick sent the carpet flying past the tack strip and I nearly ate it into the wall. We laughed for ten minutes straight. Never did get that stretch right, ended up calling his uncle to save us. Still think about that basement every time I see a knee kicker.
