Dropped $340 on a track saw thinking it would fix my cabinet work, and it mostly sat in the case
About two years back I got it in my head that a track saw was the missing piece for breaking down sheet goods in my garage. I paid $340 for one and told myself it would pay for itself on the first kitchen job. Then I used it maybe six times, and every one of those times I still had to drag out the circular saw for the last few inches because the rail was too short for a full rip. A guy I know who has run a cabinet shop in Tacoma for 30 years just laughed and showed me how he clamps a straight edge and uses a plain circular saw with a good blade, and his cuts are cleaner than mine ever were. I am not saying track saws are junk, I am saying I bought one before I knew what problem I was actually solving. If you are a hobby guy breaking down a few sheets on sawhorses, a $30 straight edge and a sharp blade gets you 90 percent of the way there. What did you buy early on that you later realized was solving a problem you did not have?
