Can we talk about how we used to cut crown molding flat on a miter saw

I used to lay it flat and do all the crazy math for the angles, which took forever and I messed up a lot of cuts. About three years ago, I saw a guy on a job in Tacoma just set the saw to 31.6 degrees and hold the molding against the fence like it sits on the wall. I tried it the next week and it changed everything. Now I just mark the ceiling and wall lengths, set the saw, and cut. It's so much faster and the joints are way tighter. Has anyone else switched to this method, or do you still do it the old way?

Remember watching my dad try to cut crown with a handsaw and a miter box. He'd get so mad when the joints didn't close up. Makes me appreciate how much easier good tools make it now.

Though honestly, a miter saw still won't fix bad math.

Wait, @wrenstone, wouldn't a handsaw and miter box just make you appreciate not having to do that anymore? Now I'm just trying to imagine the mess of trying to hold that crown perfectly still while sawing...
