Vent: I was at a coffee shop in Portland and overheard a guy bragging about how he got a 20% raise just by asking. Made me realize I haven't even asked for a cost of living bump in 3 years.

Time to schedule that awkward talk with your boss.

Schedule that talk and just ask for a raise in Portland dollars, maybe they'll pay you in artisanal toast. I love how @sean_murray calls it an awkward talk, like it's less "career growth" and more "can I have my allowance." Honestly, hearing stuff like that is the only performance review I ever get, it's a real public service. Three years is a long time to just hope they notice you haven't had a bump since before that weird tiger show.

Did your friend face the same situation and just roll over too? Honestly, my buddy Mark was in a similar spot at his IT job, hadn't asked for a raise in 4 years cause he was scared of rocking the boat. He finally worked up the nerve last spring, and his boss basically laughed and said "we just don't do that here." Tbh he ended up quitting and got a 30% bump at a new place within two weeks.
