Saw a job posting in Seattle that listed 'unlimited PTO' but required a doctor's note for any single sick day...
I was checking out a tech company's careers page downtown and the policy seemed to contradict itself. It got me thinking... is 'unlimited PTO' often just a trap to make people take less time off? Where do you stand on this?

Unlimited PTO but you need a doctor's note for a sniffle... sounds about right. It's like a restaurant saying "all you can eat" but charging you for the napkin. They want the good press of a cool policy without the actual cost of people, you know, using it. The doctor's note is their way of putting a lock on the cookie jar.

My cousin in Austin had a similar policy at her marketing firm. They called it "flexible time off" but her boss would make passive aggressive comments if anyone took a Friday. She realized her team took HALF the vacation days compared to her old job with set weeks. It creates this weird pressure where you feel guilty for using what's supposedly yours. The doctor's note thing just proves they don't trust people.
