Question about the 'follow your passion' advice for new grads

I used to push that line hard, but after seeing three friends burn out and switch fields within 18 months because they chased a 'passion' that paid $35k in a high-cost city, I'm convinced you need to find a tolerable job that funds your life first.

My cousin moved to Denver for a dream job at a tiny art gallery. She made $16 an hour and lived with four roommates just to scrape by. After two years of eating ramen and zero savings, she took a boring office admin job. Now she actually has money to buy art supplies and go to shows on the weekend. Funding your life first is the only way to keep a passion alive.

Oh, that reminds me of my neighbor's son. He loved brewing his own beer and tried to start a small brewery right after college. He was working 80 hour weeks and barely covering rent. He finally took a steady job at the water treatment plant, of all places. Now he brews on the weekends for fun and actually enjoys it, plus he can afford better ingredients.
