Paid $299 for a resume review service that just ran my draft through a free grammar check
I was job hunting in Denver last month and felt stuck after 40 applications with no callbacks, so I paid $299 for a resume review from a company I found on a job board ad. They promised a tailored rewrite and a 30 minute call, but what came back three days later was my same resume with a few commas moved and one word swapped out. The call turned out to be a sales pitch for their $1,200 coaching package, and when I asked about the rewrite they said the "base tier" only covers proofreading. I can't get the money back since I signed a no refund form, so I'm just eating the loss. Has anyone found a resume service that does real work, or should I just ask a friend in HR to look at it for free?
Check what that no refund form actually says before you write off the $299. A lot of these shops bury a line about "deliverables" and if their ad promised a "tailored rewrite" and a call, and what you got was a grammar pass and a sales pitch, that is not what you paid for. Small claims in Colorado is cheap to file and a letter threatening it sometimes shakes loose a refund on its own. Also worth a chargeback with your card if you paid by credit, since services not as described is a real dispute reason. The form protects them from "I changed my mind," not from "you didn't give me what you sold me.
