Networking felt fake until a stranger in Chicago actually helped me

I spent 3 years avoiding every networking event because I thought it was all transactional small talk. Then last month I messaged a random guy on LinkedIn who worked at my dream company, just to ask about his daily tasks, and he ended up reviewing my portfolio and recommending me to his manager. Has anyone else found that approaching people without asking for a job first makes them way more willing to open doors?
