My old manager told me to stop chasing job titles, I ignored him for 18 months
Back in 2021, my manager in Nashville kept saying I should focus on skills over titles because titles just lock you into a lane. I took a promotion to 'Lead' at another company anyway, and now I'm stuck doing the same tasks with more meetings. Has anyone else taken a title bump and regretted the actual work that came with it?

Hell yeah, welcome to the club. Nobody warns you that "lead" just means you get to do your old job plus babysit grown adults in meetings that could've been an email. Everyone thinks the title's the prize until they realize it's just a fancier name for the same headache, just with more paperwork.

Watching it happen across the whole company too. Every department has that one person who got promoted and suddenly they're the ones staying late while everyone else bails at five. It's like the system rewards the people who were already doing the most work by giving them even more to do, then slaps a title on it so they feel good about it. I've seen folks burn out in six months that way, and the worst part is nobody wants to say anything because they're supposed to feel grateful for the chance. The whole thing's backwards if you ask me, but it's just how it goes until somebody figures out a better way.
