My intern's resume lied and now I'm the one paying for it

We hired a guy in Phoenix last month who claimed 3 years of Python on his resume, but he couldn't explain a basic for loop in the first week. I spent 10 hours rewriting his code before the project deadline, has anyone else dealt with candidates who oversell their skills this badly?

Had a similar thing happen with a "senior" designer who couldn't open Photoshop. What saved me was giving them a super simple test task before the next deadline, like a tiny script that takes a number and doubles it. If they can't do that in twenty minutes, you know right away and can make them shadow you instead of touching real code. Your mileage may vary, but it beats another ten hour rescue.
