I spent $500 on a career coaching course that was just common sense

Signed up for this 'executive presence' coaching thing after a recruiter hinted I needed it. Paid $500 for a 4 week program, and it was basically 'make eye contact' and 'don't interrupt people' like my mom taught me in 4th grade. I feel like I got scammed by someone who just read a Forbes article and called themselves a coach. Has anyone else flushed cash on one of these courses?

Respectfully, a lot of people really do need to hear that basic stuff spelled out for them in a structured way before it clicks. Just because it's common sense doesn't mean everyone's actually doing it.

The whole self improvement industry feels like it runs on selling common sense back to people with a fancy label slapped on it. I see it everywhere now, not just career coaching but like fitness apps that just tell you to eat less and move more, or productivity courses that repackage "make a list and stop procrastinating". People get nervous about their careers and someone with a slick website comes along and charges them $500 to hear stuff their parents or their first boss probably told them for free. The worst part is it works because people want to believe there's a secret formula instead of just doing the boring basics consistently.
