I ignored the 'network at every event' advice and focused on just one person instead
Everyone kept telling me to collect as many business cards as possible at the Denver Tech Summit last month, but I spent the whole time talking to a senior developer from a local startup. We ended up having a 45 minute conversation about a specific coding problem I was stuck on, and he gave me a direct referral. Has anyone else found that a deep connection beats a stack of contacts?

What if the person you pick just isn't reliable though? Even a deep talk doesn't mean they'll follow through, which is exactly what happened to @lisa839. You need some backup contacts to fall back on when the main lead goes quiet.

Last year at a big food service conference in Chicago, I tried the one deep connection thing and it totally backfired. The guy I talked to for an hour promised to connect me with his boss, then ghosted me completely. I left with zero other contacts. For me, having ten quick chats means at least a few might actually answer an email later. Your way worked this time, but it feels like putting all your eggs in one basket.
