I finally figured out why my resume kept dying in online applications, and it took 11 tries to fix
I applied to 47 jobs over 5 months and got zero callbacks, which was weird because I had decent experience and a friend who works in HR at a staffing company in Austin. She looked at my resume and said the problem was the file type. I was sending everything as a PDF that had been scanned and saved, so the applicant tracking system could not read any of my text and just saw a blank page. I spent 3 weeks thinking my cover letters were bad and rewrote them 4 different times before she even mentioned it. Once I went back and saved every application as a clean PDF straight from Word, I got 6 callbacks in two weeks. That whole mess ate almost 5 months because nobody tells you the software filters you out before a human ever sees it. Now I check every file by opening it and trying to copy the text with my mouse first. Has anyone else had a resume disappear into one of those systems, and how did you figure out it was happening?
