Found out last week that trade school enrollment is down 35% since 2010

I was looking at some Bureau of Labor stats while waiting on a parts order and stumbled on that number. It surprised me because my shop has been busier than ever the last few years, especially with all the new building going up around Austin. I figured more young people would be jumping into trades with all the talk about college debt. Has anyone else noticed a drop in younger folks coming into your line of work?

Parents have been drilling the "go to college or you'll flip burgers" mentality into kids for years. They don't realize a lot of trade jobs pay better than entry level office work and don't come with student loan payments. By the time kids figure that out, they've already been pushed into a degree path and debt.

Blame the parents pushing everyone toward four-year degrees.
