Can we talk about how job hopping changed my salary
I stayed at my first job out of college for 4 years. Got 2% raises each year. Meanwhile a friend switched jobs every 18 months. After 3 years he was making $25k more than me doing the same work. I finally jumped to a new company last year and got a 35% bump. That was way more than any loyalty raise I ever saw. Has anyone else seen this kind of gap between staying and leaving?

Did you ever ask your old boss for a raise before you left, or did you just assume it was pointless?

That's the thing @sean_murray, I never even bothered to ask. Walked right out the door without saying a word about money. Looking back now, I think it's part of a bigger pattern people fall into. We get so used to hearing "no" or seeing people get turned down that we just assume the answer before we even try. It's like when you don't bother checking if a store has something in stock because you figure they won't have it. But sometimes they do, you know? I should have at least opened my mouth and made them tell me no to my face. Would have saved me a lot of wondering what if.
