Thought my '88 Civic was fine in the garage for 14 months, then I checked the brake fluid
I always figured a car that just sits is safe from wear, but when I popped the hood after 14 months and saw the fluid was almost black and the reservoir was low, a mechanic in Fresno told me brake fluid pulls water from the air the whole time, so now I want to know if anyone else has had to flush a system on a car that barely moved.

Wondering if this is really as big a deal as the mechanic made it sound. Brake fluid does soak up water over time, sure, but 14 months in a garage is not the same as 14 months parked outside in the rain. A sealed reservoir barely lets anything in, and a lot of cars sit on dealer lots way longer than that without a flush. Dark fluid could just mean it was already old when you parked it, not that the system is ruined. If the pedal still feels firm and the level is just a little low, topping it off might be all you need.
