Unpopular opinion: My buddy's 'just sleep on the ground' talk actually made me ditch my $400 air mattress
Honestly, I was having a beer with my friend Mark after a trip to the Sawtooths. He saw me wrestling with my fancy mattress pump and just said, 'Man, you know that thing is gonna fail when it's 20 degrees out, right? I've slept on a closed-cell foam pad for a decade and never woken up cold or flat.' Tbh, it hit different because he wasn't trying to sell me anything, just stating a fact from his own trips. I used that air mattress maybe six times and I swear I spent half of each night topping it off. Last trip, I finally left it home and just used my old foam pad. I slept better, packed up faster, and had zero stress. Has anyone else gone back to simple pads after a fancy setup let them down?

Mark's whole 'it's gonna fail' speech is basically the camping version of an ancient prophecy. Of course the fancy mattress waits until you're in the middle of nowhere, shivering, to slowly turn into a sad pool toy. All that time pumping feels like a ritual to please the camping gods, who just laugh and let the cold seep in. My old foam pad might look like a yoga mat for ants, but it's never once plotted against me in the night.

@jamesmason is right about the closed-cell foam, that stuff is bulletproof. I bring a cheap inflatable for comfort but always put my old foam pad underneath it as a backup. If the air mattress gets a hole, you're still insulated from the ground and won't freeze. Learned that the hard way after a long, cold night.

Honestly, that's a closed-cell pad, not just any foam pad, which makes a huge difference.
