Tried a budget sleeping pad for a 3-night trip and froze my back off

I picked up a $40 foam pad from a big box store for a hike in the Smokies last month, thinking it'd be fine for summer. Turns out the R-value was way lower than advertised and I spent every night shivering on the ground. Has anyone else had a cheap pad ruin a trip or found a solid budget option that actually works?

Learned that lesson too, cheap pads just suck for real cold.

Learned that too @leo_campbell, same goes for cheap tents in a storm.
