Took me 4 hours to figure out why my tent poles kept splitting at the joint

Everyone raves about those cheap aluminum poles but I snapped two of them on a trip near Lake Tahoe before realizing the rubber cord inside was twisted. Has anyone else had this issue with cord tension causing pole failure?

The cord tension might be a factor but those cheap aluminum poles are definitely part of the problem. I've seen the same snapping happen with brand new cords on lightweight poles that just can't handle any real pressure. Good poles should take a twisted cord and still flex without breaking.

The poles are fine, it's the cord age causing the snaps.
